چکیده

The structures of glasses prepared by melting mixtures of alkali borosilicate glass and silicon nitride powders and by ammonolysis of porous borosilicate gels were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and combustion analysis. Whereas there was little evidence of nitride bond formation in the melt prepared glasses, Si-N and B-N bonding were observed in the gel-derlved glasses. It is proposed that these differences occur because Na20 and B203 are reduced by Si3N 4 in the melt to form SiO 2 + N 2 + metal. In comparison, ammonolysis of gels is a low temperature process (<I000°C) which occurs by Lewis acid adsorption and Lewis base attack on bridging oxygen bonds.

A NEW GENERATION OF OXYNITRIDE GLASSES CONTAINING FLUORINE

Oxynitride glasses are found as grain boundary phases in silicon nitride ceramics. They are effectively alumino-silicate glasses in which nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in the glass network, and this causes increases in glass transition and softening temperatures, viscosities (by two to three orders of magnitude), elastic moduli and microhardness. Calcium silicate-based glasses containing fluo...

Toward Developing a Garnet Lherzolite Saturation Model for Lunar Low-ti, Ultramafic Green Glass Compositions

Introduction: The petrogenesis of the low-Ti lunar ultramafic glasses is critical to the understanding of volcanic processes on the Moon. Popular petrologic models developed to explain the formation of these glasses involve high pressure melting of a variety of sources, including primordial, garnet bearing, lunar mantle and depleted lunar magma ocean (LMO) cumu-lates [1,2,3,4]. Following the hi...

Fast-track communication Meeting experimental challenges to physics of network glasses: Assessing the role of sample homogeneity

We introduce a Raman profiling method to track homogenization of GexSe100−x melts in real time, and show that 2 g melts reacted at 950 °C in high vacuum homogenize in 168 h on a scale of 10μm. Homogenization of melts is precursive to self-organization of glasses. In the present glasses, compositional variation of Raman active corner-sharingmode frequency of GeSe4 units, molar volumes, and the en...

Structural Behavior of Tc and I ions in Nuclear Waste Glass

Technetium-99 (Tc) and iodine-129 (I) are two long-lived fission products of high volatility, which makes their study in glass structure challenging. Both technetium and iodine have broad ranging multivalent chemistry and complex reactivity dependent on redox conditions; technetium and iodine redox may vary from Tc to Tc and from I to I. Relatively few studies have been done on their speciation...

Midgap states, Raman scattering, glass homogeneity, percolative rigidity and stress transitions in chalcogenides

Raman scattering from binary GexSe100 x glasses excited using 1064 nm radiation display vibrational modes whose linewidths significantly exceed those observed using 647 nm radiation. In these glasses, 1064 nm radiation excites midgap states while 647 nm radiation excites conduction band tail states. Presence of midgap states in glasses, ascribed to coordination defects, is responsible for vibra...
